Netflix Introduces Updated "Thumbs Up" Feature for Mobile App Users

News about Netflix's thumbs-up feature is a trending topic on United States Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

Netflix updated its "Thumbs Up" feature, enabling mobile app subscribers to express their liking or disliking of TV shows and movies while watching them. The feature, called "Two Thumbs Up", was launched worldwide in April 2022 and allows viewers to express their profound liking, not just regular liking, towards TV shows or movies. Netflix claims that the new feature will provide valuable insight into user preferences, enabling the streamer to refine the content suggested to them.

The purpose of the "Two Thumbs Up" feature is to enhance Netflix recommendations by providing subscribers the ability to express their concrete interests to Netflix. One thumb up informs Netflix about a subscriber's preference, but two thumbs up provides a stronger signal for the content-recommendation algorithm. For instance, if a viewer gives two thumbs up to "Bridgerton," they may come across more movies or shows featuring the program's cast, or other films and titles produced by Shonda Rhimes' Shondaland.

The upgraded feature aims to simplify the process for viewers to rate videos and shows while using mobile devices. In the second half of 2021, Netflix administered global tests on a project known as "Two Thumbs Up," which were then followed by several rounds of interviews and surveys. According to the company, the name "Two Thumbs Up" coincidentally alludes to the trademark seal of approval from famous movie reviewing duo Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert.
