Texas Sales Tax Holiday Begins Today

News about Texas sales tax holiday begins is a trending topic on United States Saturday, August 12, 2023.

Texans have the opportunity to save money on clothes, shoes, backpacks, and school supplies during the annual sales tax holiday. The holiday begins today, August 11, and ends at midnight on Sunday, August 13. The sales tax exemption applies exclusively to qualifying items purchased during the sales tax holiday. Items bought before or after the holiday do not qualify for the exemption.

During the sales tax holiday, shoppers can purchase most clothing and footwear (sold for less than $100) tax-free. Additionally, they are not required to present an exemption certificate to the seller. If you are selling items that do not qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption, you may advertise that you are paying the sales tax on behalf of your customers.

If you sold qualifying tax-free items during the sales tax holiday, only report these sales in Total Texas Sales (Item 1) of your sales tax return, and exclude them from Taxable Sales (Item 2). If you sold exempt items that qualified for sales tax and collected sales tax, then you must remit it to the Texas Comptroller's office.

During the sales tax holiday, the Comptroller encourages all taxpayers to support local Texas businesses. The sales tax holiday this year is expected to relieve the burden of back-to-school expenses for numerous families.

If you need to buy eligible items, please take advantage of the sales tax holiday this weekend.
